MINDFUL EATING
"On May 1st, I prepared a dinner in the dark for my family of six. I was inspired by our mindful cooking as well as an event in my university about eating blindfolded to get a feeling what it’s like to be blind. Therefore, I planned a dinner which included being blindfolded so my family would taste the flavors of the food more intense. I shut all the blinds of the windows to make the room dark, but as I, as the chef and “waitress”, needed some orientation for cooking and serving, I put a few candles. First of all, I made my family wait outside and gave them some sleeping masks, so they were “blind” for this evening. I led them one by one to the prepared table, which was the first challenge for them. After that, I served some drinks and explained how the evening is going to go. There were three courses in already prepared plates. First, I served a carrot soup, which they thought would be difficult to eat but actually it wasn’t so hard in the end. As the main dish I prepared spaghetti aglio olio which some lemon and parsley topping. And for desert we had some apple crumble with vanilla ice creme, which was a lot harder to eat than expected. I didn’t tell my family what they had on the plate in front of them, so I made them guess the dish and the ingredients. So, for example they didn’t figure out the main ingredient in the soup, they just tasted potatoes but no carrots even though it was the main ingredient. My family enjoyed this evening a lot, even though eating for example the desert was very challenging for them. They said it’s so difficult to eat when you can’t see firstly what’s on your plate, where it is located on the plate and lastly if there is some food left on the plate when you think you’re finished. It made them and also me think a lot about how much we eat visually and how hard it is for blind people to eat in public. To conclude it was not only a great evening for my family but also me as their chef and waitress." (Ann Kathrin)

AWAKENING YOUR SENSES

At a sunny day on Eastern I organized an outside activity which I learned and participated in the project „In nature we trust“ in Italy. This method is about being aware of nature in the moment you are outside and paying attention on things that surround you. The goal is to get connected with the nature. From walking, starting from the house, it was the challenge the do the so called „fox-walk“. After showing how to do the correct fox walk, we started the workshop by walking in the direction to the nature. While walking slowly and carefully, everything was about recognizing and listening to the sounds around us which we normally don't hear because we're talking or walking without minding the steps, walking too loud and with the mind thinking about anything else other than nature and the moment. It was a challenge for my family. Even if we live in a farmers place where nature is surrounding us all the time, we never paid so much attention to the nature itself. The next check point for us were the apple trees. I started to ask what they heard and recognized, if there were sounds they normally don't hear when they are walking this path to the trees.

When we reached them with our fox walk, I started to explain the „caress of the butterfly“. In partners, the challenge was about observing a branch by only feeling it with closed eyes. The partner chooses one and the other ones with the closed eyes has to recognize „his“ branch after he/she carefully observed it.
Positive aspects: The task „caress of the butterfly“ made the most impression to everyone . The members said that they were surprised, being able to recognize a branch by only feeling it in their hands, which they usually never do. After this workshop we walked back home but more aware about happenings around us. It was a positive and nice experience for me to bring knowledge about nature awareness and share it to my own country. (Juliette)
